Who Was Fali S Nariman?



Born in 1929, Fali S Nariman was a Senior Supreme Court Lawyer and a former Rajya Sabha MP.



He graduated from Government Law College, Mumbai and began his practice in Bombay High Court.



He was appointed as the Additional Solicitor General (ASG) by the Indira Gandhi government in 1972.



But he resigned in protest after Indira Gandhi declared Emergency in 1975.



He argued several important cases that turned into landmark judgements in India's judicial history.



Along with Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan, Nariman was also awarded Gruber Prize of Justice.



Nariman authored several books including 'God Save the Hon'ble Supreme Court' and 'India's Legal System: Can It Be Saved?'



He appeared for the late J Jayalalithaa and obtained bail for her from the Supreme Court in 2014.



He appeared for the case that led to the current collegium system. However, he later emerged as a staunch critic of the system.



Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud condoled the death of Nariman and referred to him as a great intellectual and a father figure to the Bar.
