Silent dehydration occurs when the body loses more fluids and electrolytes than it consumes, often without noticeable symptoms until it becomes severe.

CAUSES OF SILENT DEHYDRATION:

Inadequate Fluid Intake:

Failing to drink enough fluids and consumption of beverages like excessive tea, coffee, aerated drinks which further increases fluid loss.

Increased Fluid Loss:

Excessive sweating during physical activities or hot and humid weather can result in increased fluid loss.

Non-diarrheal Illnesses:

Fluid loss in conditions like fever, respiratory infections, heat illnesses, and viral illnesses may lead to dehydration. Fever can lead to significant fluid and electrolytes losses along with energy deficits. Each degree Celsius rise in temperature above 39°C (102 ° F) in adults can lead to 25% increase in fluid losses via sweating & breathing.

Diabetes and Metabolic Changes:

Individuals with diabetes have high glucose levels, leading to increased fluid and electrolyte loss through urine.

ROLE OF FUIDS, ELECTROLYTES AND ENERGY (FEE):

Fluids:

Fluids help you to stay hydrated and support normal body functions.

Electrolytes:

Electrolytes like sodium and chloride help maintain body fluid balance, while potassium, calcium, and magnesium support nerve and muscle functions.

Energy:

Primarily from glucose, helps in addressing the energy requirements in non-diarrheal conditions.

Hydration Solutions:

Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day without waiting for obvious signs of thirst. During dehydration, water is the first choice that comes to mind. However, water alone may be insufficient to address silent dehydration because it lacks electrolytes and optimal amount of energy which are essential to maintain fluid balance in the body.

Homemade fluids with right balance of Fluids electrolytes energy (FEE) can be considered but may not be ideal for rehydration due to risk of preparation errors and inappropriate ratio of glucose and sodium which may affect absorption of water. .

Ready-to-serve electrolyte drinks are recommended for their known concentration of electrolytes, and energy, along with taste and convenience. They can help to replenish fluids, electrolytes and energy and can support in faster recovery from fluid electrolyte energy deficits during acute non-diarrheal illnesses
