What happened that China agreed to retreat from Pangong Lake?

Why did India and China have such a long conflict in Ladakh? What happened that the Indian and Chinese armies agreed to step back after so many days?  Will this war-like situation between India and China never happen again because China has tested India's patience and courage and has come to know that it was not easy to take more land?
