Bangladesh Protest: Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar provided an update to Parliament on the worsening situation in Bangladesh. Speaking in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday (August 6), he stated that they are closely monitoring the situation. Tensions have been high since the elections in January 2024, leading to student protests that began in June.

He noted that attacks have been made on government buildings and infrastructure, with violence persisting throughout July. The Foreign Minister emphasized their appeal for a peaceful resolution. He also expressed concern over attacks on minority shops and temples, with complete details still emerging.

Jaishankar mentioned, "Bangladesh is very close to us. Tensions have been ongoing since January, with violence occurring in June and July. We have been in touch with political parties there. Following the Supreme Court's orders, conditions worsened, leading to Sheikh Hasina’s resignation. August 4 saw the worst escalation. The attacks on minorities are particularly concerning. Sheikh Hasina is currently in India for the moment. We are in touch with the Indian community; many students have returned. Our embassy is active, and we hope the Bangladeshi government will ensure the safety of our citizens. Attacks on minorities remain a major concern. We are in contact with Bangladesh."

What Did Jaishankar Say in the All-Party Meeting?

Additionally, Jaishankar briefed leaders of all parties on the situation in the violence-affected country and the potential security, economic, and diplomatic implications. Sources indicate that he discussed the central government's strategy to limit confrontation with the new Bangladeshi government in support of the ousted leader.

Jaishankar reportedly told MPs, "This is an ongoing situation. The government will take appropriate action at the right time." He mentioned that they want to give Sheikh Hasina time to inform the center about her future actions, as she is currently in Delhi.
