Amid steep inflation, aggravated by an economic slowdown, the consumers of the country are apprehensive about their future. The Consumer Confidence Index witnessed a plunge of 8.2 points in 2019. At the same time, India has been ranked very low at 76th place out of 82 countries on a new Social Mobility Index compiled by the World Economic Forum. The Union Budget of 2020 has a tough challenge of meeting high expectations of the consumers beleaguered by rising prices of daily commodities.
