The victory in the Delhi Assembly Elections 2020, came against the backdrop of the long-running protests against the CAA in Shaheen Bagh, which Arvind Kejriwal and his Aam Aadmi Party leaders had kept away from. The AAP refused to get involved in the Shaheen Bagh protests, the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the Ram Mandir issue and several other hot-button ideological agendas. Rather, Kejriwal stuck to development and populist subsidies.
Asked why he had not gone to the protest site, Kejriwal had said he did not want to put more attention on what is the BJP’s only campaign plank.
Kejriwal’s mantra had been that the vote in Delhi should be over his government’s performance. He had appealed to voters to continue supporting whichever political party they felt strongly about, while casting their vote on his government’s developmental track record.
