View In AppThe first meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill took place on August 22 in Delhi, but no decisions were reached. Opposition MPs are demanding the bill's repeal, and Muslim organisations have threatened nationwide protests. The bill, introduced in the Lok Sabha on August 8, was referred to the JPC after a heated debate between the Treasury benches and the Opposition.
During the meeting, officials from the Minority Affairs and Law Ministries briefed the 31-member committee, chaired by BJP MP Jagdambika Pal, on the proposed amendments. The Opposition criticised the bill as targeting Muslims and undermining the Constitution, while the government argued it does not intend to interfere with mosque operations. The JPC is tasked with scrutinising the contentious legislation amid growing opposition and public protests.
