View In AppA mass marriage ceremony in which 108 couples tied the knot took place in Siliguri town of West Bengal on Sunday. The couples were mainly workers at tea plantations. The event was organised by the Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram, a social welfare organisation which has been working for the welfare of the economically deprived sections of society in the region for many years. "In the tribal areas they dont have the resources to spend. They believe they will have to arrange a feast for the entire society. When they get married they will have to arrange a feast. They dont have the capacity to do that. They live like a live-in relationship. Till they dont get married, they don't get social sanction. They are part of our society. We live in cities, they live in forest areas. Those who live in cities and forest areas should come socially together to increase brotherhood. They are our brothers. That is why we marry them so that they are connected with their families and get social sanction," says Event Convenor. The married couples say, this event has come as a blessing to them since they were unable to get married due to financial stress.
