The government is not planning to shut down madrasas completely but change the 614 madrasas into regular schools that are functioning on government funds in Assam. There are claims that 614 institutions include 100 Sanskrit teaching schools as well.
Last week, the state Education Minister had announced that the BJP-led government in Assam has decided to shut down state-run Madrasas and Sanskrit centers of learning and convert them into schools teaching regular courses.
