Kalpana Soren, the wife of jailed former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren is contesting the election with the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) candidate for the Gandey assembly bypoll.

Bypoll to the Gandey assembly seat will be held on May 20 along with the Lok Sabha elections in the state. The seat, situated in Giridih district, fell vacant following the resignation of JMM MLA Sarfaraz Ahmad.

Kalpana Soren's political journey started with the 51st foundation day of the JMM, which was celebrated in Giridih on March 4. At the event, she said Jharkhand will give a befitting reply to the "forces" who put her husband behind bars.

Hemant Soren was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on January 31 in connection with a money laundering case related to an alleged land scam.
