Former Prime Minister Chandrashekhar won from Varanasi in 1977. Congress veteran Kamlapati Tripathi won in 1980. Anil Shastri, son of Lal Bahadur Shastri, won in 1989. BJP's Shankar Jaiswal won thrice between 1996 and 1999. Rajesh Kumar Mishra of Congress won in 2004. Congress never won from Varanasi after 2004

7th phase of polling of LS Elections includes where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is contesting for a third consecutive term.
