View In AppOn Wednesday, the BJP called for a bandh in protest against the Kolkata rape case, resulting in mixed effects. In response to the protests, the Mamata Banerjee government deployed a large police force, leading to clashes between BJP workers and police in several areas. President Droupadi Murmu expressed outrage over crimes against women and called for action to curb such offenses. In a special article for PTI, she emphasized the need for India to confront the mindset that views women as less powerful and less intelligent. She highlighted that the mentality of treating women as objects contributes to these crimes and stressed the responsibility of society to remove obstacles to women's safety. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee appealed to protesting junior doctors to return to work, assuring that no action would be taken against them. She accused the BJP of using AI to spread cybercrime and social unrest, claiming their bandh aims to defame Bengal and derail the investigation into the RG Kar Hospital rape-murder case. However, the doctors rejected Banerjee's appeal. Both TMC and BJP have announced protests related to the Kolkata rape case. TMC will stage demonstrations at college gates on August 30, demanding the death penalty for the perpetrators, with further rallies planned for August 31. Meanwhile, BJP state president and central minister Sukanta Majumdar has announced a series of protests starting August 29, including a sit-in at Esplanade Y Channel and a gherao of the State Women's Commission by the party's women's wing on August 30. Congress will also join the protests, with Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury leading a rally from Shyam Bazaar to RG Kar Hospital today.
