In the past 24 hours, there have been five reported incidents of rape and harassment across different districts of West Bengal, raising questions about the governance of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's administration. Amid these protests, a special two-day session of the West Bengal Assembly is starting today. During this session, the Mamata Banerjee government is set to introduce a bill proposing that those convicted of rape should be sentenced to death within 10 days. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced its support for this bill. In support of justice for a female doctor, prominent figures from the Bengali film industry have also joined the demonstrations. The protests by film personalities, including Swastika Mukherjee, Sohini Sarkar, and Birsa Dasgupta, have continued throughout the night. The BJP leader, Suvendu Adhikari, has criticized Mamata Banerjee's government over the rise in rape incidents. He has alleged that TMC leaders and workers are involved in these cases and has called for Mamata Banerjee to resign and for the imposition of President's Rule in the state.
