View In AppThe Election Commission of India (ECI) is expected to announce the poll dates today for key states including Maharashtra and Haryana, whose legislative terms end on November 26 and November 3, respectively. The ECI may also reveal the schedule for Jammu and Kashmir’s assembly elections, with the Supreme Court setting a deadline of September 30.
The last elections in Jammu and Kashmir were held in 2014, and there have been none since. Following the removal of Article 370, the state has been eagerly awaiting elections, which could occur after a decade. Notably, Jammu and Kashmir is now a union territory, with Ladakh no longer part of it. The number of assembly seats has increased to 90, and the term of the government has been reduced to five years. Additionally, elections will be held without the late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, and Ghulam Nabi Azad’s new party will also compete in the electoral field.
