Women at the centre make beautiful baskets, lamp shades and other items that are exported to many foreign countries. The initiative has helped in providing a livelihood to many women belonging to economically weaker sections of society. The women who work at the centre are thankful for the initiative that has helped them to gain financial independence. Many of these women, who were earlier employed in hazardous jobs, are happy that they are able to work without any fear at the centre. The Madurai International Centre for Arts is seeking help from the Tamil Nadu government as it plans to expand production with the aim of helping more women earn a living in a safe environment.
