View In AppBangladesh Reservation Protest: Protests over reservation in Bangladesh have escalated, resulting in the deaths of at least six people. Thousands of students have taken to the streets, demanding an end to the reservation system. The protests have turned violent, with clashes between students and police leading to six deaths, including a child, and over 400 injuries. According to the Dhaka Tribune, the protests began on Wednesday evening in Dhaka, leading to violent confrontations with the police. In response, students have called for a nationwide shutdown on Thursday, except for hospitals and emergency services. Ambulance services will be the only vehicles allowed on the roads. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep regret over the violence and announced the formation of a judicial inquiry committee.
The protests are centered on demands to end reservations for children of soldiers who fought in the 1971 war. A recent Supreme Court ruling suspended these reservations, but PM Hasina has not enforced it. Students are protesting against the 30% reservation in government jobs for war heroes' children, demanding job allocation based on merit instead.
