Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal proposed her name, which was agreed upon by the legislators. Atishi will become Delhi’s third female Chief Minister, succeeding the late Sushma Swaraj and Sheila Dikshit. The AAP Political Affairs Committee (PAC) had earlier recommended Atishi's name during a meeting on September 16. Atishi currently manages six key departments in the Kejriwal government, including Education, Women and Child Development, Tourism, and Power. Arvind Kejriwal announced his resignation from the Chief Minister's post on September 15. He is scheduled to meet with Lieutenant Governor Vinai Saxena to formally submit his resignation. Kejriwal had been arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21 in connection with the Delhi Excise Policy case, and was later arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He received bail from the Supreme Court on September 13 in the CBI case, having already been granted bail in the ED case, and was released from Tihar Jail on the same day. In his resignation address, Kejriwal expressed his wish to undergo a "trial by fire" and stated he would not return to the Chief Minister’s seat until he receives a certificate of honesty from the public. He also appealed for elections to be held with Maharashtra in November.
