It is a major city in the Ayodhya district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.  The government of Uttar Pradesh headed by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had approved the renaming of Faizabad district as Ayodhya and shifting of the administrative headquarters of the district to Ayodhya city.
