View In AppImagine waking up to find your own hand choking you—this is the reality for those with Alien Hand Syndrome (AHS). This rare neurological disorder, affecting fewer than 80 people worldwide since 1908, involves losing control over one’s hand, which begins acting independently. AHS is linked to damage in the lower frontal lobe of the brain, though the exact cause remains unclear. It can arise from brain injuries, especially to the frontal lobe or corpus callosum, which connects the brain's hemispheres and regulates motor functions. Brain tumors pressing on the brain can also trigger AHS, causing uncontrolled movements in the hand opposite to the dominant side. Affected individuals often experience embarrassment, stress, and depression due to their hand’s erratic behavior.
