The passage of the historic triple talaq bill in Parliament was one of the major achievements of the Narendra Modi-led NDA government. The Triple Talaq law or Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019 which prohibits divorce by pronouncing "talaq" thrice in one occasion by their husbands and prescribes a punishment of up to 3 years' imprisonment was passed by the Centre in July 2019. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had then said that a historic wrong done to Muslim women has been corrected and an "archaic and medieval practice" confined to the dustbin of history.
