As per the rules for the National Anthem, whenever it is played people must stand in attention. This wall painter does just that, standing still on a thin window ledge while holding his tool that is in the bucket of paint. The viral video has won the hearts of many netizens.

However, students can be seen moving around in the video.

The video likely taken by another student captured the painter standing on the ledge completely still as the national anthem was sung.

The video has garnered over 51.3 million views and over 4 million likes. Netizens left several comments such as, “He is the real indian........👏😍”; one wrote “Salute !”. A user wrote, “This not education this is sanskar🙏and love for nation proud of this man👏” and one more wrote, “Proved education doesn't mean you have basic manners”.  One commenter wrote,  “Shame on the students who didn’t stop.”

According to the ‘Orders Relating To The National Anthem Of India’ by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA),  “Whenever the Anthem is sung or played, the audience shall stand to attention. However, when in the course of a newsreel or documentary the Anthem is played as a part of the film, it is not expected of the audience to stand as standing is bound to interrupt the exhibition of the film and would create disorder and confusion rather than add to the dignity of the Anthem.

“In all schools, the day’s work may begin with community singing of the Anthem. School authorities should make adequate provision in their programmes for popularising the singing of the Anthem and promoting respect for the National Flag among students.”

The ministry also explains, “The National Anthem of India is played or sung on various occasions. Instructions have been issued from time to time about the correct versions of the Anthem, the occasions on which these are to be played or sung, and about the need for paying respect to the anthem by observance of proper decorum on such occasions. The substance of these instructions has been embodied in this information sheet for general information and guidance.”
