After Twitter launched a subscription service allowing users to buy blue check mark for $8, 'verified' fake profiles seem to flood the platform. Earlie, notable personalities from different categories were the only ones who were given the coveted verified check mark. This was done after verifying their background and checking their official ID allocated by the government among others.
The drawbacks of the new subscription policy have started to surface as Jesus Christ has now got the opportunity to have a verified Twitter account.
Yes, you read that right. A Twitter handle called @jesus has been verified by the micro-blogging site. The account features a profile picture of a Jesus statue pointing its right index finger and raising its left thumb with a smile and a wink. It also has 7,82,000 followers.
After getting the blue tick, the account on November 9 tweeted, “Who has two thumbs and verified?”
The handle also responded to one of the news report questioning its authenticity. With a tag of “to whom it may concern”, the account tweeted quoting a news report “why the assumption I am fake?”
Before sealing the $44 million deal, Musk claimed that Twitter was ridden with bots/fake accounts, and hence he did not want to carry on with the deal. But, now the social networking site has become a platform where users are impersonating major brands and celebrities, even God!
"I can now finally get a blue check and establish Myself as the one true God of Twitter and the universe if I give Elon Musk $96 a year," the 'God' account user wrote taking a dig at Musk.
"I can't suspend Elon Musk from Twitter, but I can suspend him from a cross," the account user further wrote on Musk's latest decision of suspending accounts not mentioning parody.
Musk had stated that any Twitter handles that engage in impersonation without specifying the account as a "parody" will be permanently suspended.
