An inebriated man, identified as 70-year-old Pratap Singh, allegedly beat an 85-year-old woman named Kalki Bai Gameti to death in Rajasthan’s Udaipur district, said police Sunday. The incident took place in Tarpal village under the Saira police station area on Saturday, a purported video of which has gone viral on social media, reported news agency PTI. In the viral video, Singh was seen thrashing a woman with an umbrella and kicking her with his legs near the Mahadev temple. The accused was heard saying that he was an incarnation of Lord Shiva while thrashing the woman in the video.
Police said four people, including Pratap, Nathu Singh, and two juveniles who were present there and filmed the incident, have been detained for further interrogation, PTI reported.
In the video, the elderly woman was seen asking for mercy. This happened despite another person standing near the accused telling him not to do so. Moreover, two minors who recorded the video also tried to stop the accused from thrashing the woman.
Commenting on the matter, Udaipur SP Bhuwan Bhushan Yadav said, as quoted by PTI, “During questioning, the man told police that in his drunken state, he thought that he was an incarnation of Lord Shiva and beat the woman to death. He also claimed to bring her back to life.”
He also confirmed that four people along with the prime accused have been arrested. The drunk man was hallucinating and imagined himself to be an incarnation of Lord Shiva and believed he could kill the woman and resurrect her, a top police official said, as reported by NDTV.
In the viral video, the drunk man was seen sitting beside the woman and telling her that he is a follower of Lord Shiva, who has sent him to her.
The accused said, "Maharani hai tu (you are a queen)," and he suddenly started punching the woman with a lot of force on her chest. Subsequently, the woman collapsed on the ground, and the accused was seen mercilessly dragging her.
