A video of a group of lions trying to hunt a young elephant has gone viral on the internet. The footage from South Africa's Kruger National Park was recorded by Brent Schnupp and uploaded on the YouTube channel of Latest Sightings. Since being shared the clip has amassed 3.3 million views and close to 2,000 likes.
In the clip, one can see three lions closely trailing the calf. At one point the baby elephant also tries to charge at them, creating panic among the lions for a moment.
According to the description shared in the video, the baby elephant was left behind as the mother tried to cross the road in a hurry. A few lions spotted the calf and tried to make it their prey.
"A mother elephant ran across the road in a hurry without realizing that she left her baby behind. Lions spotted the lost calf and saw an opportunity!," read the description shared along with the video.
"The lions, sensing an opportunity, came onto the road and soon realized that the mother elephant had left her calf behind. The younger male lion took the lead in chasing the defenseless baby elephant. In contrast, the older male lion just stood and watched on, while the lioness also seemed uninterested," the description further read.
Immediately after being shared the video went viral with over 3 million views and tons of comments.
"The lions seem to be curious and decided to follow junior. The lions probably had a big meal just prior to following the baby elephant," commented one user on the post.
"Elephant moms protect their baby’s at all cost. Wander how she lost her baby," wrote another user.
"The baby elephant did so well! Always keeping an eye on what's behind," commented a third.
