The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) received the best Sewerage Treatment Plants (STPs) maintenance award at the World Water Awards 2022–23, held in New Delhi. The competition was conducted by Water Digest in cooperation with UNICEF and the Ministry of Jal Shakti.

The HMWS&SB submitted its entry under the ‘Best STP-Government Category’ titled ‘Making Hyderabad a 100 per cent sewerage treatment city.’ The submission highlighted the newly constructed 31 new STPs in Hyderabad, along with a 339 MLD Amberpet STP.

The Union Minister for Water Resources and Jal Shakthi, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, presented the award to HMWSSB Director, Sridhar Babu.

According to a Telangana Today report, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat praised the city, saying Hyderabad is heading forward to become the first city in the country to treat 100 per cent of the sewage water.

HMWS&SB Managing Director, Dana Kishore said besides providing drinking water to everyone in the city, the Board was working hard to treat the sewage generated. He said the state government has sanctioned 62 STPs under the Sewerage Master Plan of Hyderabad city at a cost of Rs.3,866 crores.

"This is the first time in the country that a State government has sanctioned such a large sum for 100% sewage treatment," he told Telangana Today.
