Hyderabad: A 32-year-old man was successfully treated with the help of modern treatment protocols at KIMS hospital in Hyderabad after being diagnosed with a rare ailment with symptoms of tightness in the hands and legs and trouble walking, similar to Parkinson's disease.


KIMS hospital performed the world's first Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery automated. Doctors say it is a revolutionary treatment for Parkinson's disease and other brain infections. 


Dr Manas Panigrahi, Head, KIMS Neurosurgery, Secunderabad, performed the successful operation and succeeded in using modern technology to perform the complicated surgery.

According to reports, Abhinay Kumar began to experience tremors in his right hand more than six years ago, which worsened with age and made it impossible to grasp even a teacup. As the disease progressed, he could not walk, causing him to quit his job.


Dr Dhanunjay and Dr Praveen Kumar Yada assisted Dr Manas Panigrahi in completing this surgery. Doctors said that the Parkinson's Center at KIMS Hospital is one of the few centres in Asia to perform such complex surgeries successfully. 


KIMS Hospital offers artificial intelligence-based robotic system epilepsy surgery, brain tumour biopsy, deep brain stimulation for Parkinson's disease, psychiatric treatment at the hospital.

According to doctors, the stealth auto guide robot calculates the exact position and path to reach the target area in the brain. Neurosurgeons place a very thin wire with very small electrodes on its tip. It provides electrical stimulation to the most delicate tissues.


For deep brain stimulation to work correctly, it must be done in ​​exactly 0.8 to 1.2 millimetres. Using the Stealth Auto guide robot, the Parkinson's group at KIMS Hospitals achieved an accuracy of 0.2 on a recent surgery, which is the best in the country according to Auto guide data. That's about the thickness of a single hair.


If the surgery is done manually, the neurosurgeons will have to calculate the coordinates themselves and tighten the leads in the brain with their own hands. Having an auto-guided robot with artificial intelligence, the robot prepares the coordinates based on the information fed by the surgeons. It completes the whole process with the utmost accuracy by the instructions given. 


Abhinay Kumar is now perfectly fine and able to do anything he ever wanted to do following the treatment.
