Telangana Govt Moves Supreme Court Over Ganesh Idol Immersion In Hussain Sagar Lake

GHMC told the high court that if the immersions is not allowed in Hussain Sagar lake, it would take 6 days for the entire statues to be immersed in other ponds in the city limits

Hyderabad: Days after Telangana High Court ruled that the Ganesh idols made of Plaster of Paris (PoP) shouldn't be immersed in Hussain Sagar lake -- which is considered as the main lake in Hyderabad and is located in the heart of the city -- state government has decided to approach the Supreme Court over the same issue.

Although Greater Hyderabad Municipality Corporation (GHMC) filed a review petition, the government decided to go to the Supreme Court after the High Court refused to amend the judgment. On the other hand the feasibility of alternative arrangements is being explored. In the greater Hyderabad city limits, more than one lakh idols of Lord Ganesha have been erected. Officials estimate that 90 per cent of the erected Ganesh idols are made of PoP.

GHMC told the high court that if the immersions is not allowed in Hussain Sagar, it would take 6 days for the entire statues to be immersed in other ponds in the city limits.

In the petition filed, GHMC said that there are thousands of huge statues but there are not enough puddles for the status to be immersed. Large statues are difficult to immerse in puddles. Cranes are brought to the immerse the idols and other arrangements have already been made at Hussain Sagar. Plans for immsersion is made months ago said the GHMC in a statement.

Despite the GHMC asserted that the waste would be removed within 24 hours after immersion the High Court refused to appeal the amendment of the judgment relating to the immersion.

According to the High Court final hearing, 90 per cent of these idols are not allowed to be immersed in other puddles in the city limits, including Hussain Sagar. Although a review petition was filed on the matter, the High Court refused to budge with the petition filed by municipality officials. After conducting a review meeting with the superiors on the High Court verdict, Chief Minister KCR has decided to appeal in the Supreme Court. 

Special pools are being built in 25 ponds in the city. However it will take a few more days to pull the pools and fill them with water. In addition, the immersion of large statues in the Baby Ponds is difficult. In this context, GHMC officials feel that moving the Supreme Court is the only way to get permission for the immersion of idols in Hussain Sagar. The government is also taking steps in the same direction.
