Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy on Saturday announced that the state government will provide Rupees 5 lakh accidental insurance to gig workers such as those involved in driving cabs and auto-rickshaws and food delivery. 


The Chief Minister made the announcement at the ‘Rajiv Arogyashri' programme in Hyderabad. 


As per an official press release, CM Reddy also ensured that the government would provide Rs 10 lakh health cover under the Rajiv Arogyasri scheme to the gig workers in the state, reported PTI. 


During a meeting with cab and autorickshaw drivers and food delivery executives in the state capital, the CM said that the state government will provide social security to workers in the unorganised sectors and will make a policy decision in this direction.






He also promised that the state government would study the existing policy for gig workers in Rajasthan and introduce an effective law in the next state budget session, the release said.


CM Reddy also instructed the officials to extend financial assistance of Rupees 2 lakh to the family of the Swiggy delivery executives who died after being chased by a dog and falling from the top of a building. 


According to the release, the CM has advised the gig workers  to submit their applications either online or physically in the Grama Sabhas to be organised from December 28 to January 6, 2024. 


The meeting was also attended by IT and Industries minister D Sridhar Babu among others, the report added.

In July this year, the Congress government in neighbouring Karnataka had announced Rupees 4 lakh insurance facility to the gig workers serving as delivery personnel in e-commerce companies. 


Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had announced the move during his budget speech in the Legislative Assembly.


The amount included Rs two lakh as life insurance and Rs two lakh and accident cover. The CM said that the entire insurance premium will be borne by the state government.
