Hyderabad: Police and Maoists exchanged crossfire on Tuesday in Telangana's Mulugu district. Four Maoists were killed in a firing incident in the Karregutta forest area. Greyhounds constable injured in the firing. Police combing continues in the Karregutta forest area for the Maoists. 


The death toll is likely to rise. The cross-firing occurred near Karregutta in the Venkatapuram zone on the Telangana-Chhattisgarh border. 


According to sources the Telangana Armed personnel were involved in the operation. Venkatapuram and Vajedu area committee in charge of Sudhakar were among the dead Maoists. The Greyhounds constable injured in the encounter was taken to Hanumakonda for treatment.

About 40-50 armed Maoists were reportedly in the hills of the Perur, Ilmidi and Usur police station areas on the Telangana-Chhattisgarh border. The Greyhounds Force and DRG/CRPF forces from the Bijapur district were deployed in the region. The Maoists observed the troops and opened fire on the police. Three other Maoists, including senior Maoist leader Sudhakar, were killed when police opened fire.


Following the encounter, the bodies of four Maoists, including a female Maoist, were found at the location. According to the Bastar Range Inspector's Office, police are still combing the area.
