Telangana BJP chief Bandi Sanjay on Friday alleged "love jihad" as the main reason behind a junior doctor's attempted suicide at Kakatiya Medical College. He also said love jihad cases were on rise in Telangana and Hindu women were being harassed, trapped, and cheated.
Bandi Sanjay, as quoted by news agency ANI, said "I’m clearly saying it’s a love jihad case. Love jihad cases have increased in Telangana & Hindu women are being harassed, trapped, and cheated. They are receiving money from abroad and are targeting and harassing women."
On February 22, a junior doctor of Kakatiya Medical College in Warangal allegedly attempted suicide. Her family alleged she attempted suicide because of harassment by a senior doctor. She attempted to kill herself by administering a lethal injection.
On Friday, Telangana Police arrested a senior student of Kakatiya Medical College for allegedly harassing a junior, who attempted suicide. According to an IANS report, Assistant Commissioner of Police Bonala Kishan said they are probing the incident from all angles.
Mohammed Saif was booked by the police after the first-year student of the postgraduate (MD) programme in the department of anaesthesia at the Kakatiya Medical College (KMC) in Warangal attempted suicide on Wednesday.
The female student is battling for her life at Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad. She is on ventilator support.
The woman's father alleged that she took the extreme step due to harassment by her senior. He also claimed that the KMC authorities did not take action despite their complaint.
Meanwhile, police have beefed up security at KMC and MGM Hospital because of protests by students' bodies and political parties demanding action against the guilty.
KMC has formed a four-member committee to conduct an inquiry. Dr V Chandrasekhar, director of MGM Hospital, has also assembled a committee of four professors to investigate the matter. It will submit a report to the director of medical education.
Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan paid a visit to NIMS on Thursday night to inquire about the student's condition. Tamilisai also met her family members. She later told the media that it was unfortunate that this happened to a medical student.
The Governor later tweeted that it was painful to see a PG doctor in a critical care unit. "Workplace stress in higher medical studies needs remedies. A thorough probe should be conducted. NIMS will ensure the best medical care to save her life," she wrote.
