Hyderabad: The number of Omicron cases is increasing in Telangana. Four more cases of the newest SARS-CoV-2 variant, were reported in Hyderabad on Thursday, taking the total number of Omicron patients in the state to seven.


Three of the four persons who tested positive for Omicron are from Kenya, while the fourth is an Indian who has just returned from an 'at-risk' country.


Dr G Srinivasa Rao, Director of Public Health, said Thursday further details about the four "imported Omicron positive cases" would be shared on Friday as investigation was on. 






Earlier, a 23-year-old woman from Kenya and a 24-year-old Somalian man had tested positive for Covid-19 at the Hyderabad International Airport and were shifted to Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences (TIMS), the government designated isolation facility for Omicron cases.


After arriving on December 12, they were allowed to go home because they were not from an 'at-risk' country, but their samples were sent for genetic sequencing. The results that came on Wednesday confirmed them to be infected with Omicron.


As many as 40,103 samples were tested in Telangana. Of these, 190 new Covid-19 positive cases were reported on Thursday. 


In Telangana, there have been 6,79,064 cases of Covid-19 and 4,012 deaths to date. On Thursday, another 195 people were declared recovered, bringing the total number of such patients to 6,71,247 at a rate of 98.8%.
