Special Parliament Session: Consider Women's Quota Bill As Top Priority, BRS MLC Kavitha Urges I.N.D.I.A, Centre

Even though it was announced that a special session would start on September 18, the agenda for the session still remains under a wrap.

Amid Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi announcing a special session of Parliament from September 18, BRS MLC Kavitha on Tuesday urged the I.N.D.I.A bloc and the Centre to use the session as an opportunity to pass the Women's Reservation Bill. The MLC said that NDA can pass the Bill with ease since they have a huge majority in the lower house. She also urged all the political parties to take up the Bill and rise above the political partisanship. Though the announcement regarding the convening of five-sitting session was made, the agenda of the session still remains under wraps.

Kavitha had also sent an appeal to 47 political parties presidents including BJP and Congress chiefs. In the letter, the MLC had requested the parties to unite despite political differences to pass Women's Reservation Bill in the special Parliament Session. The MLC also sent letters to Chief Ministers of Andhra Pradesh (Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy), Delhi (Arvind Kejriwal), Bihar (Nitish Kumar), Tamil Nadu (M K Stalin), West Bengal ( Mamata Banerjee) and Odisha (Naveen Patnaik), as per PTI.

Talking to PTI, BRS MLC Kavitha said, "A special Parliament session has been called by the government and I believe this is an opportunity for the Women's Reservation Bill to be passed.”

“There has been a special session of the Parliament called for various reasons. The issue of women's representation in the Parliament is of utmost importance and with folded hands I request all the political parties to take up this issue and rise above the political partisanship,” she said. 

The MLC said that the Bill could be passed with just “three minutes of concentration” by the NDA and I.N.D.I.A bloc. With that, she said, 33% of women could come into Parliament and Assembly.

“This current govt does not have a comfortable majority in Rajya Sabha, but the Women's Reservation Bill is already passed in Rajya Sabha. So they just have to put it in the Lok Sabha and give the Women's Reservation Bill,” she said, as per IANS. 

Kavitha also urged I.N.D.I.A bloc and its leaders including Malikkarjun Kharge and Nitish Kumar meeting on Tuesday to consider Women's Reservation Bill as a top priority.
