Congress leader Palvai Sravanthi will be the party's candidate for the upcoming Munugode bypoll in Telangana. Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi approved the candidature of Palvai Sravanthi for the bypoll scheduled to e held in December.
The seat fell vacant due to the resignation of Congress MLA Komatireddy Rajagopal Reddy on August 8. Reddy joined the BJP during a public event in Munugode in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Palvai Sravanthi is the daughter of late Congress veteran Palvai Govardhan Reddy, who was a five-time MLA from the same constituency and represented Telangana in the Rajya Sabha as an MP.
Palvai Sravanti had unsuccessfully contested from the Munugode constituency as a Congress candidate in the 2014 election. She was defeated by TRS candidate Kusukuntla Prabhakar Reddy.
Munugode Assembly constituency has seven mandals, two municipalities, 176-gram panchayats and 288 polling booths.
Munugode bypoll notification is likely to be out by September end.
Earlier, addressing a rally at Munugode, Amit Shah said, "The joining of Rajagopal Reddy in the BJP is the beginning of the uprooting of the KCR govt. They promised that they would celebrate Telangana Liberation Day in September. However, KCR govt did not fulfil their promise."
He further said Raj Gopal Reddy's victory in the bye-election would be a defining moment for the BJP before KCR's family rule is overthrown in Telangana. Telangana will soon have a BJP chief minister, Shah said.
