Hyderabad: Telangana Minister KT Rama Rao on Wednesday questioned whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi truly mean what he said about "respecting women" in his Independence Day speech, citing the release of 11 prisoners in the Gujarat Bilkis Bano case.


Taking to his Twitter handle, KTR wrote "Dear PM Narendra Modi Ji, if you had really meant what you spoke about Respecting women, urge you to intervene & rescind the Gujarat Govt remission order releasing 11 Rapists. Sir, it is nauseating to put it mildly & against MHA order. Need you to show sagacity to the Nation'.


In a second tweet, KTR wrote, " Sir, I also urge you to make necessary amendments to the Indian Penal Code (IPC) & The Code of Criminal Procedure (CRPC) suitably so that no Rapist can get a bail through judiciary Strong legislations are the only way to ensure Judiciary can deliver swiftly & perform at its best.

In his Independence Day address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that respecting women is an essential pillar for India's growth and said, "we need to support our 'Nari Shakti'."


With pain echoing through his voice, PM Modi urged the nation to "stop disrespecting women." PM Modi remarked that women suffer numerous obstacles in India and that Indians must resolve to eliminate any attitude or conduct that disrespects women.


It is essential that in speech and conduct, "We do nothing that lowers the dignity of women", the PM said. He emphasised gender equality and highlighted increased women's participation, 'Nari Shakti' in all walks of life.
