Hyderabad: The number of deaths registered in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) since the pandemic hit is officially displayed as over 3,200 but according to reports in The Hindu, the official numbers are distorted from the original ground reality, which is 10 times higher than the death tally misled by the state government.

The number of deaths registered officially by the city corporation is 3,275 since April 2020 while the real numbers showed 32,752 excess deaths which shed light on the poor governance. Besides, in two instances, the Telangana High Court had pointed out that the government failed to furnish a proper Covid deaths tally.

Despite the excess deaths consists of deaths due to several other reasons but the Covid deaths sum up to most of the tally. Only 74% of deaths were recorded with the corporations in Telangana, according to the recent National Family Health Survey (2019-20) as reported by The Hindu

During the first wave, the overall deaths reported were 1,535 but the actual numbers display that over 18,400 excess deaths happened in and around Hyderabad which comes under the corporation limits. This shows that the Covid deaths are being undercounted as for a matter of fact most of the death toll is due to Covid.

According to reports, for the first five months of 2021, the death toll has been 14,332 excess which is more than the official Covid deaths of 1,740. And since the Pandemic hit in April, 18,420 were the excess deaths till December 2020.
