Congress leader Gaddam Prasad Kumar was unanimously elected Telangana Assembly Speaker on Thursday. Pro tem Speaker Akbaruddin Owaisi made the announcement on Thursday. Earlier, Kumar filed his nomination for the post.

According to ANI, Congress leader Gaddam Prasad Kumar unanimously elected as the Speaker of Telangana Assembly.

"...Shri Gaddam Prasad Kumar (is) elected unanimously to the office of the Speaker," Owaisi declared, congratulating the former.


After the Pro Tem Speaker's announcement, CM Revanth Reddy and his deputy Vikramarka and BRS MLA KTR conducted him to the Speaker's chair. The members of the Assembly also congratulated the Speaker.


Revanth Reddy also thanked all the parties for supporting his candidature.


All parties including BRS, AIMIM and CPI supported Prasad Kumar's candidature. However, BJP members were against the decision. 


On Thursday, BJP MLAs took oath in the Telangana Assembly after Congress leader Gaddam Prasad Kumar took charge as the Telangana Assembly speaker. Earlier, they had refused to take oath under the Pro tem Speaker Akbaruddin Owaisi. They had also given representation to the Governor in this regard.


Pro tem Speaker Akbaruddin Owaisi was appointed from AIMIM.


When Prasad Kumar’s nomination was submitted to the legislature secretary, Revanth Reddy, his cabinet colleagues, BRS Working President Rama Rao, AIMIM MLAs and lone CPI MLA Kunamneni Sambasiva Rao were present.


Earlier, the legislature secretary informed that nominations would be accepted between 10.30 AM to 5 PM on Wednesday, while the election would take place on Thursday.


In the recently concluded elections, Congress won 64 seats and its pre-poll ally CPI got 1 seat. BRS bagged 39 seats while AIMIM secured seven seats. The BJP secured eight seats.
