WhatsApp Adds Bouncing Three-Dot Feature To Make Chats Feel More Interactive. Here's How It Works

While WhatsApp's typing feature is nothing new, the latest update makes sure WhatsApp looks more in line with other Meta apps such as Facebook Messenger or Instagram.  

WhatsApp has introduced a new feature designed to improve user engagement during conversations. The Meta-owned instant messaging platform has launched a bouncing "three dots" typing indicator, which appears at the bottom of the chat screen when someone begins typing. The feature, now available globally for both Android and iOS users, applies to one-on-one and group chats alike.

In addition to the visual "three dots," the typing indicator is accompanied by the sender's profile picture, offering users a clearer view of who is actively participating in a conversation.

Unveiled on December 5, the typing indicator aims to make conversations feel more dynamic and real-time. While the feature is enabled by default, it remains unclear if users will have the option to turn it off. 

What's Exactly 'New' Here?

Now, users may recall that this "xx is typing..." feature was available earlier as well, and appeared on top of a chat window. Now, it's more animated and appears on the bottom of the screen. While there's nothing new here, the latest update makes sure WhatsApp looks more in line with other Meta apps such as Facebook Messenger or Instagram.  The concept is not entirely new; Apple’s iMessage has had a similar feature for years.

While many see it as a useful addition that fosters engagement, some users may find it intrusive, preferring not to disclose their typing activity to others.

India, WhatsApp’s largest market with over 500 million monthly active users, is expected to see significant adoption of this feature. The platform has consistently enhanced its offerings to cater to its diverse user base.

WhatsApp's New 'Drafts Indicator'

Recently, WhatsApp introduced several other updates aimed at improving the overall experience. Among them is a "Drafts Indicator," launched in October, which makes it easier for users to locate and complete unfinished messages.

In addition, the platform is testing new functionality that allows users to scan QR codes to join channels seamlessly. Android beta testers are also getting early access to a redesigned chat list interface through version 2.24.25.8. The revamped interface promises a more intuitive and customisable experience, building on earlier updates that let users manage preset filters like "Unread" and "Groups."

These innovations demonstrate WhatsApp's commitment to enhancing user convenience and retaining its status as a leading messaging app globally.
