In a move aimed at bolstering the national industrial sector, Reliance Industries and Nvidia have unveiled a strategic collaboration to create India's very own large language model, tailored for generative AI applications and capable of accommodating the country's diverse languages. The two corporate giants will collaborate to construct AI infrastructure that surpasses the computing capabilities of India's fastest supercomputer by more than tenfold. Nvidia will provide access to its cutting-edge technology, including the Nvidia GH200 Grace Hopper Superchip and the Nvidia DGX Cloud — an AI supercomputing service hosted in the cloud. The GH200 Superchip represents a fundamental breakthrough in computing architecture, offering remarkable performance and unparalleled memory bandwidth.

This Nvidia-powered AI infrastructure will lay the groundwork for Reliance Jio Infocomm, the telecommunications arm of Reliance Industries, to explore new frontiers in AI. The global AI revolution is reshaping industries and daily life, and to harness India's vast potential in AI, Reliance will develop AI applications and services for its 450 million Jio customers. Furthermore, they will offer energy-efficient AI infrastructure to scientists, developers, and startups across India.

AI has the potential to enable rural farmers to access weather information and crop prices in their local languages via mobile phones. It can facilitate large-scale expert medical diagnosis based on symptoms and imaging scans in areas where immediate access to doctors may be limited. Additionally, AI can enhance the prediction of cyclonic storms using decades of atmospheric data, thereby aiding timely evacuations and shelter finding for those at risk.

The AI infrastructure will be hosted in AI-ready data centres, with plans to expand to a staggering 2,000 MW. Execution and implementation will be overseen by Jio, leveraging its extensive expertise in mobile telephony, 5G spectrum, fibre networks, and more.

Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of Nvidia, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, "We are delighted to partner with Reliance to build state-of-the-art AI supercomputers in India. India has scale, data, and talent. With the most advanced AI computing infrastructure, Reliance can build its own large language models that power generative AI applications made in India, for the people of India."

Reliance Jio's broad expertise, infrastructure, and engineering capabilities make it well-suited to deploy and manage the new AI computing infrastructure. This collaboration with Nvidia is aligned with its strategy of becoming a comprehensive digital, cloud, and networking platform for both consumers and business customers.

Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries, emphasised the significance of the partnership, stating, "As India advances from a country of data proliferation to creating technology infrastructure for widespread and accelerated growth, computing and technology super centres like the one we envisage with Nvidia will provide the catalytic growth just like Jio did to our nation’s digital march."

Akash Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm, echoed this sentiment, saying, "At Jio, we are committed to fueling India’s technology renaissance by democratising access to cutting-edge technologies, and our collaboration with Nvidia is a significant step in this direction. Together, we will develop a state-of-the-art AI cloud infrastructure that is secure, sustainable, and deeply relevant across India, accelerating the nation’s journey towards becoming an AI powerhouse."
