New Delhi: Aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across its value chain, American chip-making giant Intel has revealed its plans on cutting direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions and developing more sustainable technology solutions and pledged to hit net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in its global operations by 2040. The company mentioned that it is working to drive global sustainability and greenhouse gas reduction through its own actions, partnerships with suppliers, and empowerment of customers and other innovators.


In a bid to hit this goal Intel is planning to achieve 100 per cent renewable electricity use across its global operations and invest $300 million in energy conservation at its facilities to achieve 4 billion cumulative kilowatt-hours of energy savings. According to the semiconductor maker, its cumulative greenhouse gas emissions over the past decade are nearly 75 per cent lower than they would have been in the absence of investments and action.


"Specifically, Intel pledged to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in its global operations by 2040, to increase the energy efficiency and to lower the carbon footprint of Intel products and platforms with specific goals, and to collaborate to create solutions that lower the greenhouse gas footprint of the entire technology ecosystem," the company said in a statement.


Intel is also mulling to build what it calls new green factories and facilities and also launch a cross-industry R&D initiative to identify greener chemicals with lower global warming potential and to develop new abatement equipment.


"As one of the world's leading semiconductor design and manufacturing companies, Intel is in a unique position to make a difference not only in our own operations, but in a way that makes it easier for customers, partners and our whole value chain to take meaningful action too," said Pat Gelsinger, Intel CEO.


The company added that it remains committed to its 2030 goal of increasing product energy efficiency by 10 times for client and server microprocessors.
