An Indian man who relocated from India to Canada for a job with tech giant Meta was laid off just two days after joining the company. The IIT-Kharagpur graduate put up a post on LinkedIn and wrote he has "no idea" what the future holds for him.
The IIT-graduate named Himanshu V. mentioned that his heart goes out to everybody facing a difficult situation right now. Himanshu is among the more than 11,000 employees that were fired by the tech giant in a massive layoff that CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced earlier this week.
"I relocated to Canada to join #Meta and 2 days after joining, my journey came to an end as I am impacted by the massive layoff. My heart goes out to everyone facing a difficult situation right now ❤️ 🫂 What's next for me? Honestly, I have no idea! I'm looking forward to whatever comes next. Let me know if you know of any position or hiring for a software engineer (Canada or India)," Himanshu wrote on his LinkedIn page.
Many LinkedIn users commented on his post and offered help while several others tagged relevant people to increase the reach of his post.
"Please look at relevant job openings in Deloitte canada! Once you find something suitable feel free to get in touch and I will share your resume to the required team! Also sharing this to my network," wrote a LinkedIn user named Moushumi Samajdar Mukherjee.
According to Himanshu's LinkedIn page, he is an IIT-Kharagpur graduate and has been previously employed with companies like Adobe, GitHub and Flipkart. Himanshu's post on LinkedIn was liked by close to 10,000 people and was reshared by more than 60 users at the time of writing this article.
Facebook parent Meta’s lay-off on Wednesday, which saw 11,000 employees being shown the door, has hit India teams too, albeit marginally, news agency IANS reported. In one of the worst lay-offs ever in the global tech industry after Twitter that saw 90 per cent of India team being sacked Meta Founder and CEO Zuckerberg sacked about 13 per cent of the global workforce and extended hiring freeze through Q1, 2023.
According to business intelligence platform Tofler, net profit of Facebook India Online Services, the registered entity of Meta, jumped to Rs 297 crore in FY22 in comparison to Rs 128 crore in FY21, while its revenues grew 56 per cent to Rs 2,324 crore in FY22 from Rs 1,485 crore in FY21.
Last week, Meta announced that its India head, Ajit Mohan, decided to step down from his role at the company to pursue another opportunity. Mohan has taken over Indian operations of Snap, which is the parent company of Snapchat, which is growing exponentially in the country especially among the youth.
Meanwhile, Zuckerberg said that as a severance measure, the company will pay 16 weeks of base pay, along with two additional weeks for every year of service, "with no cap".
