Google Starts Rolling Out Theft Protection Features For Android 10 & Above Users, Here Are The Key Functions

Google first trialed these theft protection features in Brazil in June 2024, and they are now becoming available to Android users worldwide, including those with Pixel and Samsung devices.

Google has now begun to roll out advanced theft protection features for the devices that run on Android 10 or above. These features are aimed at enhancing user security against phone theft. Google initially announced these features at I/O 2024, and now they are being released via Google Play services. They are designed to protect your personal data even when your phone gets stolen. 

Theft Protection: Key Features

The update comprises three key features, which are:

• Theft detection lock: This feature leverages sensors, Wi-Fi, and smart device connectivity to detect if someone unexpectedly grabs your unlocked phone while it's in use. When such behavior is identified, the phone will immediately lock itself, blocking unauthorized access to your personal information.


• Offline detection lock: This feature is built to safeguard your device even when it's offline. If a thief disables Wi-Fi or mobile data to prevent location tracking, the device will automatically lock itself for added protection. Notably, this feature will be activated when you are actively using the device and it can only screen lock your device twice a day.


• Remote lock: In case your phone is stolen, you can go to android.com/lock to remotely secure your device. This option lets you enter your phone number and set up a security challenge for prompt action. Google claims this method offers a quicker response compared to the Find My Device feature.

Users can find the new Theft Protection settings by searching for 'Theft protection' in the Settings app or by going to Google Services > All services > Personal & device safety. This section provides an overview of the built-in features designed to protect your data if your device is stolen.

Currently, US users enrolled in the Google Play services beta (version 24.40.33) can access all three theft detection features, with a wider rollout anticipated soon.
