Google I/O Conference: Gemini Coming To Gmail On Smartphones

Users interested in testing out the summaries feature within the app will have the opportunity to do so starting this month before its wider release.

Google is gearing up to add Gemini to a platform where it is highly needed: the Gmail app on smartphones. During its annual I/O developer conference on Tuesday (May 14), the company revealed that starting next month, Workspace and Google One AI Premium subscribers will have access to Gemini for email summarisation within the Gmail app.

Users interested in testing out the summaries feature within the app will have the opportunity to do so starting this month before its wider release. Contextual smart reply and Gmail Q&A will be introduced as experimental Workspace Labs features in July.

However, Google has not provided a precise timeline for an official release.

The tech giant further explained that later on, users will be able to use Gemini directly from Gmail, both within the app and on the web, to inquire about their emails or generate replies based on the context of the email.

It should be noted that the reply suggestions, referred to as "Contextual Smart Reply," will be the same as the existing "Smart Reply" feature, but with added "detail and nuance." Additional features will be available via a new Gemini button within the Gmail app, the company noted. Google added that tapping this button will bring up suggestions such as "summarise this email" or "suggest a reply."

Users also have the option to type a prompt to inquire about emails.

These are tasks you can typically perform through alternative methods. For instance, in the Google app, you can inquire about your emails, and Workspace Labs testers can employ prompt-based AI-generated replies within the Gmail app. Nonetheless, there is no denying that having enhanced Gemini functionality directly within the space of the Gmail app on a smartphone would be convenient, particularly for professionals managing multiple emails daily.
