Google has unveiled a new functionality for its AI chatbot, Gemini, providing users with detailed control over the generated responses to prompts. This feature allows users to modify specific portions of the text, offering the ability to regenerate, edit the length, or entirely remove the selected segment. Presently, the feature is exclusively available for the web app version and has not been extended to the app. It's worth noting that Google recently announced multiple new AI features tailored for Android devices.
In an official announcement, Google stated, “We're launching a more precise way for you to tune Gemini's responses. Starting in English in the Gemini web app, just select the portion of text you want to change, give Gemini some instruction, and get an output that's closer to what you are looking for.”
This enhancement aims to provide users with greater control over their creative process by allowing them to make changes to specific segments of the response without regenerating the entire text.
How To Use This New Feature
After generating a response to a prompt, users can highlight and select any part of the text, revealing a pencil icon within a circle. Additionally, the Gemini logo appears alongside the pencil icon. Hovering over the icon displays the description "Modify selected text." Clicking on the icon reveals four options — Regenerate, Shorter, Longer, and Remove.
The functionalities align with their names. "Regenerate" alters the selected text portion by generating it anew. "Shorter" and "Longer" allow users to respectively decrease or increase the length of the text, while "Remove" completely deletes the chosen segment. Moreover, users have the option to include a specific prompt for the identified portion to modify it accordingly.
This feature proves to be quite convenient. For individuals familiar with AI chatbots, it's common to encounter situations where an excellent response is compromised by a single sentence. Typically, the remedy involves regenerating the entire content or adjusting the prompt, leading to repetitive iterations until the desired outcome is achieved. The ability to make precise adjustments through this feature has the potential to significantly streamline the process, saving users valuable time.
