New Delhi: The much-anticipated Samsung Galaxy S22 series that is slated to be unveiled on February 9 is being made out of discarded fishing nets. The revelation comes from Samsung just ahead of the launch of the flagship Galaxy S22 lineup and according to that the South Korean tech giant has developed a new material out of repurposed ocean-bound plastics. Samsung will start using the repurposed fishing nets on its range of Galaxy devices, starting with the Galaxy S22 series that will be unveiled at the Unpacked event.
"Ocean-bound plastic" is likely a water bottle or a grocery bag drifting on the ocean surface and there are as many as a whopping 640,000 tons of fishing nets are abandoned and discarded each year. The upcoming devices from Samsung will reflect its ongoing effort to eliminate single-use plastics and expand the use of other eco-conscious materials, such as recycled post-consumer material (PCM) as well as recycled paper.
"Made with repurposed ocean-bound discarded fishing nets, the use of this material marks another step in our Galaxy for the Planet journey that aims to minimize our environmental footprint and help foster more sustainable lifestyles for the Galaxy community," the company said in a statement.
"With this transformation, the future of Galaxy technology will bring leading product design and deliver better environmental impact," the company added.
The company has not revealed the percentage of the new material made out of discarded fishing nets being used in the upcoming Galaxy S22 series. Samsung did mention that is committed to addressing ocean plastic pollution in a way that "will positively impact not only the environment but also the lives of all Galaxy users".
It is nice to see Samsung take further steps in introducing sustainable products - it has cut down the amount of plastic and paper from its smartphone packages in the past few years.
