In a bid to cut imports and meet local semiconductor requirements, US-based semiconductor manufacturer has started the construction of its $2.75 billion semiconductor testing and assembly facility in Sanand in Gujarat. Micron has asked Tata Projects to build its advanced semiconductor assembly and test factory, the media has reported. Micron has conducted a "groundbreaking ceremony" in the state of Gujarat and will invest $825 million over a period of seven years in Gujarat.

Micron held the groundbreaking ceremony or Bhoomi Pujan of the plant on Saturday. The facility is being set up on a sprawling 93 acres of land. The plant is located in the Industrial Development Corporation area of Chaarodi, Sanand. The project is the biggest investment under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM).

According to a report by The Hindu Businessline, Phase 1 of the facility's construction will include a 5,00,000 square feet of cleanroom space, slated to be operational by late next year. The project encompasses the design and construction of a first-of-its-kind DRAM and NAND assembly and test plant in the country. DRAM is the memory used to store code for algorithms, and processes while NAND, on the other hand, is the memory used to store data for pictures, music.

According to the Union Minister of Information and Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, the first chipset rollout from Micron's Sanand plant will happen by December 2024.

To recall, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's state visit to the US, Micron, a prominent US-memory chip company, announced its plans to establish a new semiconductor assembly and test facility in the country.
