Indonesia has officially banned the sale and use of the Apple iPhone 16 within its borders. Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, the nation's Industry Minister, stated that any iPhone 16 in the possession of consumers will be considered illegal. He advised potential buyers against purchasing the device from overseas, highlighting the gravity of the ban. This announcement has left many tourists uncertain about the implications for those who currently own an iPhone 16 or are planning to visit Indonesia in the near future.

Kartasasmita explained that the iPhone 16 lacks the necessary International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) certification required for operation in Indonesia. He urged the public to report if they see anyone using the iPhone 16 in Indonesia as the device is illegal.

Why Did Indonesia Impose A Ban On iPhone 16?

The ban is a result of Apple not meeting its investment obligations in Indonesia. Reports suggest that the company has invested around 1.48 trillion Rupiah (approximately $95 million) of the pledged 1.71 trillion Rupiah, leaving a gap of about 230 billion Rupiah ($14.75 million). Kartasasmita noted that the Ministry of Industry cannot issue permits for the iPhone 16 until Apple fulfills its commitments.

Earlier this month, the minister had indicated that the iPhone 16 could not be sold in Indonesia due to the lack of TKDN certification, which mandates that 40 percent of a product's components be sourced locally. This certification is essential for Apple as it is tied to the company's promise to establish research and development facilities in Indonesia, referred to as the Apple Academy.

What Can Tourists Do If They're Visiting Indonesia With An iPhone 16

Tourists heading to Indonesia with an iPhone 16 should exercise caution following the country's recent prohibition on the sale and use of this device. Without the required IMEI certification, any iPhone 16 in use within Indonesia is considered unauthorized. This ban could impact visitors who plan to use their iPhone 16 while in the country.
