Facebook parent Meta Platforms Inc. has engaged in discussions with Apple Inc. to explore the possibility of incorporating Meta's generative artificial intelligence (AI) model into Apple's newly-announced AI framework, Apple Intelligence, according to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ). The iPhone maker has created its own smaller AI models, but it has indicated that it will rely on partners for more intricate or specialised functions.
The Wall Street Journal report added that AI startup Anthropic has also been in discussions with Apple about integrating its generative AI technology into Apple Intelligence, according to sources familiar with the situation.

Apple Also In Talks With Alphabet For Collaboration
This move aligns with Apple's strategy to incorporate technology from other AI firms into its devices. Additionally, there have been reports that Apple is in talks with Google parent Alphabet, also its long-standing search partner, about a possible collaboration. The Cupertino-based tech giant is likely to explore partnerships with various AI companies in regions such as China, where Microsoft-backed OpenAI's ChatGPT is banned.
Meta and Anthropic chose not to comment, and Apple did not immediately respond to requests for comment made outside of regular business hours, says a Reuters report.
The WSJ report noted that AI startup Anthropic has been in talks with Apple about integrating its generative AI technology into Apple Intelligence, according to sources familiar with the development. The discussions are still ongoing and may not result in an agreement. Securing deals with Apple would enable AI companies to achieve broader distribution for their products.
A source familiar with the matter was quoted as saying by Reuters that AI search startup Perplexity has also been in talks with Apple to integrate its generative AI technology into Apple Intelligence.
This month, Apple unveiled its long-anticipated AI strategy, announcing the integration of its new Apple Intelligence technology across its suite of apps, including Siri. The company also plans to introduce ChatGPT to its devices. Apple emphasised that it aims to distinguish itself from competitors Microsoft and Google by prioritising privacy as a fundamental aspect of its features.
What Is Apple Intelligence
Apple Intelligence was officially launched earlier this month, promising a transformative experience for iPhone, iPad, and Mac users. This innovative system combines the power of generative models with personal context to deliver intelligence that is not only incredibly useful but also highly relevant to individual users. Integrated deeply into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, Apple Intelligence leverages the formidable capabilities of Apple silicon to understand and create language and images, streamline tasks across apps, and utilise personal context to simplify everyday activities.
