Two years have passed since Apple announced its last iPad Air but, this wait is expected to end on May 7 when the sixth generation iPad Air will be launched at the ‘Let Loose’ event. The upcoming iPad Air has been rumoured to introduce many new features to further close the gap between the iPad Pro series. Here is all that we know so far about the upcoming series from the house of iPhone maker.
iPad Air (6th Gen): Launch Date (Expected)
Apple is expected to introduce the new iPad Air series alongside the iPad Pro on May 7, with sales likely to commence the following week.
iPad Air (6th Gen): Price (Expected)
Regarding pricing, the 11-inch iPad is projected to maintain the same price as its predecessor (Rs 59,900), while the 12.9-inch model may be priced at approximately Rs 10,000 higher in India.
iPad Air (6th Gen): To Come In Two Sizes (Expected)
Apple is anticipated to release the 6th generation iPad Air in two size variants - a standard 11-inch model and a larger 12.9-inch model. According to a recent report, these iPad Air models will retain a regular LED panel, known as a Liquid Retina display by Apple. While mini LED displays offer higher contrast levels and brightness than regular LED panels, they also come with a higher cost.
It seems Apple might opt for regular LED panels to manage manufacturing costs effectively. The refresh rate is expected to be capped at 60 Hz. Additionally, the bezels on the upcoming models are likely to mirror those of the 5th Gen iPad Air.
iPad Air (6th Gen): New Colour Options (Expected)
Apple has a reputation for employing lively colour palettes for the iPad Air, a trend that is anticipated to persist this year. The forthcoming iPad Air models are also projected to feature a premium metal unibody design, a power button integrated with Touch ID, a USB-C port, and a quad-speaker configuration.
iPad Air (6th Gen): Selfie Camera (Expected)
Apple is expected to shift the front-facing camera orientation from portrait to landscape to enhance the video calling experience, a move already seen in the 10th Gen iPad. Despite this alteration, leaks from Instant Digital indicate that the camera's specifications are likely to remain unchanged.
The iPad Air is anticipated to feature a 12 MP sensor for its front camera, while a similar 12 MP camera is expected to be present on the rear of the device as well.
iPad Air (6th Gen): More RAM & Storage, Thanks To The Chip (Expected)
The existing iPad Air, equipped with the M1 chip, already boasts impressive power. The forthcoming model is expected to receive an upgrade to the M2 chip, delivering substantial enhancements in CPU, GPU, and AI performance.
Additionally, Apple may increase the base model's storage capacity to 128 GB, doubling the current amount, and provide at least 8 GB of RAM. These additional resources are poised to support upcoming AI features set to be revealed at WWDC 2024.
Apple has a reputation for employing faster PCIe storage technologies, and the 6th Generation iPad Air will follow suit. Unlike its predecessor, which tops out at 256 GB of storage, the next model could offer up to 1 TB of storage space.
iPad Air (6th Gen): Bigger Battery, Faster Charging (Expected)
It's anticipated that both versions of the iPad Air will feature larger batteries, potentially with enhanced fast-charging capabilities. With a more efficient chip, these models could offer improved battery longevity. Similar to the iPhone 15, Apple might incorporate new battery technologies to extend the lifespan of these batteries.
