Mercedes-Benz introduced an innovative virtual assistant during the CES electronics trade fair on Monday, marking a notable advancement in the integration of artificial intelligence in automobiles. This virtual assistant is designed to offer context-based suggestions and engage in meaningful dialogues with users. Capable of adopting various tones and emotions, the assistant can intelligently pose questions to clarify inquiries, providing a dynamic and interactive user experience, according to the company's announcement.


Markus Schaefer, Mercedes' Chief Technology Officer, emphasised the assistant's role as a dialogue partner during a press roundtable in Las Vegas, stating, "The car is your dialogue partner. You can ask questions, have a conversation, be productive."


The rollout of this advanced virtual assistant is slated for inclusion in vehicles, including the upcoming concept CLA class. This new model represents an all-electric iteration of the carmaker's smaller four-door design, making its North American debut at the trade show.

The trend of sophisticated voice assistant technology in automobiles is gaining momentum, with Volkswagen showcasing its integration of ChatGPT technology in its latest vehicles. This technology allows drivers to have researched content read aloud during their journeys, adding a layer of convenience and interactivity.


Volkswagen has announced that its voice assistant, featuring ChatGPT technology, will be capable of engaging in dialogues with users by mid-year, retaining memory of previous interactions and tailoring responses accordingly.


Mercedes-Benz has also highlighted an additional feature of its virtual assistant — a plausibility check for the responses it generates. By cross-referencing recommendations with cloud data and user self-reports, the assistant ensures reliability, especially in scenarios where recommended establishments, such as restaurants or shops, may have closed down.


Schaefer emphasised the company's commitment to providing trustworthy information, stating, "We feel that we have an obligation if we put something in the car that you can trust the information." This reflects a dedication to user confidence and data integrity in the integration of advanced AI technology in automotive systems.
