World Oceans Day is celebrated on June 8 every year to remind us of the importance of the ocean. World Ocean Day was first formulated after a United Nations conference on environment and development in Rio De Janerio in 1992. The UN General Assembly, however, officially recognised June 8 as World Oceans Day in 2008.
Every year, World Oceans Day is celebrated on a particular theme and this year, the theme is "Planet Ocean: The Tides are Changing”.
The oceans cover over 70% of the earth's surface and make it the largest ecosystem on our planet. Oceans are a support system for all the organisms of the world. Oceans are a major source of food, medicine and an undeniable part of the ecosystem.
The day also reminds us of the extensive exploitation of natural resources. It is the duty of every individual to save oceans from getting polluted and ensure aquatic creatures do not lose their habitats due to over-exploitation of the resources.
